This Article aims at explaining an appropriate & comprehensive approach so as to accurately deal with traditional architecture and thus to understand the truth and essence of this type of architecture, a truth that is evidently lacking within the literature of architecture; and thus, inappropriate formulation of this problem, and superficial responses to it, have led to meaninglessness and turmoil in contemporary architecture. This study is based on the assumption that phenomenology could provide an appropriate response to the problem of methodology concerning the essence of traditional architecture. In this way, and with use of library studies and the method of logical reasoning, we seek to give a rational order to the outspread and incoherent writings of the past, in relation to the phenomenological method, and with a commitment to phenomenological thought. The results of this research indicate that conceptual thinking and scientific and quantitative confrontation with works of architecture cannot reach us to the fundamental nature of architecture. Instead, we need to go back to the artwork itself, and approach them sympathetically, so as to find a common language with them, and make their basic concepts & unspoken content clear. Of course, this method, unlike any quantitative method, does not follow a specific and articulate path, and is, therefore, planned in relation to the subject matter, and the researcher’s creativity. In the end, we emphasize that the more strongly the researcher connects with the world in which these works of art emerge, the nearer will our understanding be to their essence.
